Making the most of your relationship with OTAs

What makes the disruptive innovation of OTAs so fascinating is that they are simultaneously the hotels’ biggest competitor, and potentially their largest online sales channel (for all but the largest chains). The OTAs and the hotels clearly need each other.

The High Cost of High Tech

And even higher cost of underwhelming your guests with dated technology.

Checking into a hotel, the staff on the desk informed me that the minibar was “pressure-sensitive,” so if you took something out and then put it back, you’d still be charged. I couldn’t help but wonder why the minibar was smart enough to know when I had taken a beer, but not clever enough to forgive me after my moment of weakness.. I nodded in acknowledgment, thanked him politely and then shuffled off to my room, pondering the changes in technology and human behaviour, and how they affect the bottom line. LEED Hotels

LEED -- Leadership in Energy and Environmental DesignDuring a recent trip to the US, I had the pleasure to stay in several excellent hotels. Two of them were LEED certified. What surprised me were that they were the only hotels of their kind (in the 2 major markets they were in).

“Eco” has been a buzzword for a while nowwith every hotel thrusting its eco credentials forward, even if it is only a sign in the bathroom asking you to reuse towels (incidentally the most self-serving of all eco-friendly options, something I find quite cynical on the part of the hotels). Online hotel booking findings from the ITB World Travel Trends Report

ITB World Travel Trends ReportITB is a huge endeavour, with 108,000 trade visitors, and over 10,000 exhibitors from 180 countries at its Berlin show (not including the ITB Asia show), and the participation of so many travel related companies gives it access to an impressive amount of data.

Looking through this, i was excited to see the continued growth in online bookings, especially in a difficult year for travel and tourism. Read the rest of this entry »

Hotel websites are all the same?

Read an interesting post on Hotel Blogs — Most hotel websites look the same, try to be different — which comments on Seth Godin’s assertion that hotel websites all look the same.

Interesting point. Leaving aside the bigger point that hotels are struggling to innovate in their core product and brand offerings, innovation with travel sites is hard. In the early years of the internet, it could be argued that innovation was high — when the marketing department controlled the sites, and looked for the Wow! factor, often through Flash and lots of graphics. The result was a bit of a mess, and sites that didn’t necessarily generate a lot of revenue. Read the rest of this entry »
